When a friend and I took a trip to Cape Cod to paint, our last and best stop was Wellfleet. We found a perfect spot next to a building with shade and a great view! I found myself carefully positioning “Mom” exactly in the center of the painting and with the chair perfectly straight. It wasn’t until my friend asked me why I centered the chair (which is usually a no-no for artists, I realized what I had done. I put it right under the church steeple in the center of the picture. Later, I realized that this painting emphasizes Mom’s central love in life besides her family: her church. The art I create is always zeroing in on the truth and I can usually only read it later.
The original of this painting is available.
